Brendan McDermid | Reuterswatch nowSwiss headline inflation fell from 1.7% in December to 1.3% in January, well below consensus forecasts, while core inflation dropped from 1.5% to 1.2%. Analysts at Capital Economics said the steep decline meant inflation "looks sure to undershoot the SNB's Q1 forecast of 1.8%." "However, with the January inflation downside surprise, the SNB forecast looks too high to us, and the probability of a policy rate cut on 21 March has increased. Bank of Japan to end negative rate era While most major central banks are looking at loosening monetary policy after more than two years of aggressive tightening to combat rampant inflation, the question for the Bank of Japan is the opposite. The country's core inflation rate — which excludes food and energy — fell to 2% year-on-year in January, after a third monthly increase, surprising slightly to the upside and suggesting that a sustainable return to ultra-low inflation may not be in the cards.

It's been a great month for Eaton stock. The power management company notched a series of record highs during a lengthy post-earnings rally that saw shares surge 17% in February. They include infrastructure spending, further artificial intelligence adoption necessitating the construction of more data centers, the acceleration of the transition to clean energy, and the rise of nearshoring and onshoring. The semiconductor giant's results highlighted strength and demand for data centers — a big part of Eaton's overall business and sales. AI data centers require lots more electrical components, which will likely show up on Eaton's order book down the line.

Wall Street is forecasting a better backdrop for companies that want to go public. While lower rates can stoke the IPO market, fewer rate cuts because the economy remains strong with cooling inflation should still be viewed as favorable. The IPO market and mergers and acquisitions (M & A) activity started to sour when the Fed began hiking interest rates back in March 2022. A strong IPO market overall is expected to also benefit burgeoning biotechnology firms, which would mean more business for Danaher. A trader works, as a screen displays a news conference by Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell following the Fed rate announcement, on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 13, 2023. That is, the Fed is pivoting toward cutting interest rates — not in March but sometime later in the year — and the central bank is expecting to reduce short-term interest rates three times in 2024. I never believed that the Fed would cut interest rates in March nor cut them as many as six times this year. While it's often said that interest rates go up an escalator and come down in an elevator, I believe this cycle will show itself to work in reverse. That, of course, could change should the economy slow significantly, or should the unemployment rate rise rapidly.

It's ironic: We are at a moment where supply of money and demand for goods are intersecting. We have two markets: the Treasury market and the equity market, with the first more powerful than the second, even if we can't tell that in the scrum of earnings announcements. If the Fed signals more rate cuts, then we will be set up for higher stock prices if the companies deliver good earnings. The possibility of higher earnings so far has been controlled by supply and demand and the disinflation it is breeding, which may continue this week. Hence the power of their earnings to generate the mask of a higher market price-to-earnings ratio.
